The breast is one of the most important organs of a woman. Although it does not have a vital function, it is important as one of the most attractive parts of the female body and has a great function such as producing milk for the baby after becoming a mother. Perhaps all women want to have full and well-shaped breasts. Unfortunately, many of us weren’t born with the perfect breasts and that’s the reason why breast lift, breast augmentation, and breast reduction operations are in great demand all over the world. Sometimes, women who are considering having these operations approach the surgery uneasy if they plan to become a mother in the future/again. So, do breast surgeries affect the pregnancy, birth, and breastfeeding process that will develop later for real?
Before answering this question, let’s briefly mention common aesthetic breast surgeries.
Breast augmentation: It’s the surgical process of placing breast implants, usually made of silicone, into the subcutaneous tissue.
Breast reduction: Contrary to breast augmentation, it consists of removing the excess fat and skin tissue in order to reduce breast volume.
Breast lift (Mastopexy): It’s the procedure of raising sagging breasts while also resizing them.
Although most women have reservations about this issue, it is unlikely to have a problem with breastfeeding after any breast surgery performed by a specialist doctor. In particular, whether the milk ducts are damaged from breast augmentation and reduction surgery is the biggest concern of the patients. In breast augmentation surgeries, the prosthesis/implant is placed under the breast tissue, so it has no relation with milk ducts. The biggest problem to be faced in the case of pregnancy after breast augmentation is that the breast volume collapse after the breastfeeding period and the effect of the surgery is lost. However, there will be no problem with milk production and breastfeeding.
The concept is slightly different in breast reduction surgeries. If the patient intends to have a child in the future, the milk ducts that form the connection between the milk glands and nipple should be protected as much as possible during the operation. However, this technique is a difficult approach to apply to excessively sagging breasts, especially in women who have given birth before. It cannot be said that there will be no milk weaning after breast reduction surgery, nor can it be said that the mother can produce milk for her baby for sure. For this reason, it would be more reasonable for women who do not intend to have more children to choose this operation.
The same is true for a breast lift surgery; since an experienced and good surgeon will take care not to damage the milk ducts, the expectant mother will not have any problem in breastfeeding her baby.
